Here is an explanation of the three tiers we offer for

Provenance Research

Introduction:

Provenance Protection: A Tiered Approach to Documentation and Discovery.
Every item carries a story—some well-known, others waiting to be uncovered. Our tiered provenance services are designed to meet your needs wherever you are in that journey, whether you're documenting known details, enriching historical context, or preparing for publication and legacy stewardship. Each tier reflects a different level of research depth, documentation, and interpretive framing, tailored to your goals and the nature of your item. From foundational records to comprehensive narratives, we offer clarity, credibility, and collaborative insight at every stage.

We are currently only accepting requests for Tier 1 Provenance Certificates

Tier 1 — Essentials / Foundational

For documenting what is known and laying groundwork for future research.

A focused review of existing documentation to confirm foundational provenance and identify potential avenues for deeper inquiry.

Ideal for newer acquisitions for casual collectors—suited for clients seeking to formally record known provenance without initiating further research.

Core Deliverable:
One-page (front and back) Certificate of Known Provenance, summarizing verified facts and supporting documentation.

Collaboration:
Direct client engagement to confirm accuracy and completeness of provided materials.

Tier 2 — Contextual / Expanded

For enriching your item’s story with meaningful historical and contextual depth.

A deeper level of research into origin, ownership, and historical context. This includes selective cross-referencing with archives, databases, and comparable works accessible through established research channels.

Recommended for mid-range artworks, antiques, or items with partial documentation—ideal for clients preparing for appraisal, sale, or exhibition.

Core Deliverables:
Four-page Certificate of Provenance detailing narrative findings and documented results.
Focused Research Report outlining key discoveries and supporting evidence (not exhaustive, but providing substantial context).

Collaboration:
Direct dialogue with the client to ensure contextual emphases align with their goals.

  • As needed, inclusion of vetted outside researchers or subject-matter experts—especially for specialized archives or niche fields—with full transparency and quality control.

Tier 3 — Interpretive / Comprehensive

For establishing authoritative provenance and crafting a richly layered historical narrative.

An intensive research engagement that traces origin, ownership, and cultural significance across time. This includes cross-referencing with specialized archives, scholarly publications, and comparative works—often requiring multi-source synthesis and interpretive framing.

Recommended for high-value artworks, rare antiques, or items with complex histories—ideal for clients preparing for publication, institutional acquisition, or legacy documentation.

Core Deliverables:
Up to Eight-page Certificate of Provenance presenting a cohesive narrative supported by verified documentation and interpretive insights.

  • Comprehensive Certified Research Report detailing findings, source citations, and contextual analysis.

  • Optional Supplemental Materials such as annotated timelines, provenance maps, or curated bibliographies, tailored to the item’s story and client goals.

Collaboration:

  • Ongoing dialogue with the client to shape interpretive direction and ensure alignment with intended use.

  • Inclusion of vetted external researchers, archivists, or cultural specialists as needed—with full transparency, attribution, and quality control.

  • Optional coordination with legal, curatorial, or institutional partners for publication or acquisition readiness.

Special Note:

Upgrades from previously issued certificates require the return of earlier versions to preserve documentation integrity. Retired certificates are no longer valid for formal representation. All prior certificates must be returned in full prior to the issuance of the upgraded version.

Provenance is the recorded history of an object’s origin, creation, and ownership. It serves as a critical framework for verifying authenticity, establishing trust, and understanding the cultural, historical, and creative forces that shaped its journey.
